Kona coffee farms can be found on the Big Island of Hawaii. Visitors will have to either fly via an interisland flight or directly to Kona International Airport at Keahole. Another international airport services the Hilo area, but the drive time between Kona and Hilo is about two and a half hours.
To visit the farms, head north on Palani Road (Highway 190) from Kailua-Kona. One of the first farms on this route is the Mountain Thunder Kona Coffee plantation. Drive up Palani Road about four and a half miles and make a right at Kaloko Drive. Continue on for another three miles, and make a right on Hoa Street. Mountain Thunder will be on the right side of the street after a mile.
If you want to continue the tour, go south on Palani Road from Mountain Thunder, back to the Highway 180 and Highway 190 junctions, head south on the Mamalahoa Highway to Holuloa Town. On the way, you'll hit the Ueshima Coffee Company's Kona Coffee Estate. The farm sells its coffee at a roadside kiosk with a magnificent view of its coffee trees and the ocean.
Driving into Holuloa Town, you'll see the Ferrari Coffee Visitor Center. It's across the street from the Kona Hotel. Further down there's the Kona Blue Sky Coffee Company, an anomaly among most of the smaller coffee farms for its 500 acre size. Down the 180 Highway is the Holualoa Coffee Company.
For a historical perspective of Kona and coffee, visit the Kona Coffee Living History Farm on Mamalahoa Highway in Captain Cook. It is a coffee and macadamia nut farm and it offers a glimpse into the lives of early Kona coffee farmers.
Most coffee farms are located on private dirt or dead end roads. It's a good idea to call ahead to get see if the farm you're interested in offers tours and to double check the address and directions with an online mapping service.
