Make the perfect french press of Kona Coffee!

How to brew the perfect cup of Kona Coffee using a French Press

The art of brewing the perfect cup of Kona Coffee using a French press is more detailed than you imagine.

There are many ways to brew a cup of Kona Coffee, but a personal favorite at Kuahana Coffee Company is to brew using the French Press. We find that the fine control over the temperature of the water, the grind of the Kona Coffee made with french press equals awesomefacebean, and the steep of the coffee allows for the most superior flavors to be created.

To start this process you will need the following items:

  • Kuahana Kona Coffee
  • One grinder (burr or blade)
  • One measuring device that can hold & heat water
  • One French Press

  1. Grind your Kuahana Kona Coffee
  2. Start by taking approximately 2-4 tablespoons of Kuahana Kona coffee and placing it in your grinder. You can grind to a desired coarseness; however, we recommend approximately 1/16 inch particulate when done for best results. A burr grinder will do this automatically with the appropriate settings. If you are using a blade grinder, we suggest using short 'bursts' of the blade while shaking the coffee to get the desired coarseness.

The finer the grind, the more powerful and thicker the coffee will be! If you want a Turkish style coffee, grind the Kona bean until dust like. if you want a very subtle cup of Kona Coffee then grind the bean very coarse.

When you are finished grinding your Kuahana Kona coffee, dump it into the bottom of the French Press

  3. Heat your Kona coffee water
  4. Using a microwavable container that can hold at least a single full French Press worth of water, or a kettle or similar device, heat up your water to the optimal temperature of 182 degrees. We have found that using a glass measuring cup in the microwave works best. To heat 4 cups of water in a glass cup in the microwave takes approximately 5-7 minutes on high. Remember: you don't want the water boiling hot, otherwise it will cause your Kona coffee to taste bitter and not sweet.

  5. Pouring the water and timing your coffee
  6. When you have finished heating the water, ensuring it is not boiling, pour it into the French Press with your ground Kuahana Kona Coffee. Once you have filled your French Press with water, place the press handle back into position.

Press the Kona coffee approximately 1/3 to 1/2 of the way down the press and leave it. You should let the Kona coffee steep for between 1-6 minutes depending on your desired taste. The longer you leave the Kona coffee steep the more powerful tasting the Kona coffee flavors will be. At Kuahana coffee we prefer to steep our Kona coffee for 4 minutes.

Once you have finished steeping your Kona coffee, depress the plunger/filter to the bottom of the French Press. Your Kona coffee is ready to be consumed!

  7. Pour a cup of Kona coffee and enjoy!
